A driver faces multiple charges in connection with a recent fatal accident in Charlotte, North Carolina.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, a 22-year-old man was driving a stolen 2014 Acura ILX and speeding when he hit a 2007 Toyota Camry with a 21-year-old man behind the wheel.
The Toyota driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the Toyota driver was attempting to turn left onto Donald Ross Road in West Charlotte when the car was struck by the Acura, which had been reported stolen in February.
The Acura driver ran from the scene of the crash and later was located. They found an open container of alcohol in the car, and a passenger was charged with underage possession of alcohol.
The driver of the allegedly stolen car suffered injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. He immediately was charged with driving while intoxicated, and he later was served with warrants for felony death by motor vehicle, second-degree murder, reckless driving, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of marijuana and driving with a revoked license.
“Excessive speed, recklessness and alcohol are contributing factors in this crash for [the Acura driver],” according to the police department. “Speed is not a factor for [the victim] and alcohol test results are pending.”
This crash took a young man’s life, and it likely would have been avoided had the driver made different choices before he got behind the wheel. We don’t know much about the victim, but he could have left behind a family he was helping to support.
